New York City, New York
The Lake in Central Park is a scenic 22-acre body of water located in the heart of Manhattan. Designed as part of Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux's original plan, it offers some of the park's most iconic views and tranquil recreation opportunities.
The Bow Bridge, which spans the lake, is one of the most photographed spots in New York City. Bethesda Terrace and Fountain overlook the lake, providing a grand architectural backdrop to the natural scenery.
One of the most popular activities is renting a rowboat from the Loeb Boathouse. Visitors can also take a classic Venetian gondola tour or simply enjoy a walk along the shoreline to admire the reflections of the city skyline.
Spring and fall offer breathtaking colors, while summer is the peak time for boating. Early morning is the best time for photography and avoiding the midday tourist crowds.
Access to the lake and surrounding paths is free. Rowboat rentals and gondola tours have associated fees and are typically available from April through October.
The Loeb Boathouse features a restaurant, an outdoor bar, and a snack bar. Public restrooms are located nearby at Bethesda Terrace.
Boat rentals are first-come, first-served, so arrive early on sunny weekends. The lake is a great spot for birdwatching, especially during migration seasons.
The Lake is close to Strawberry Fields (the John Lennon memorial), the Ramble, and the American Museum of Natural History.
