New York City, New York
The Bronx Zoo, operated by the Wildlife Conservation Society, is one of the largest metropolitan zoos in the world. Spanning 265 acres of parkland and naturalistic habitats, it is home to over 6,000 animals representing more than 700 species.
Must-see exhibits include the Congo Gorilla Forest, Wild Asia Monorail, Tiger Mountain, and the Himalayan Highlands. The zoo is also famous for its historic architecture, such as the Astor Court and the Rainey Memorial Gates.
Visitors can take the monorail for a bird's-eye view of Asian wildlife, feed the sea lions, or enjoy the Bug Carousel. The zoo also offers educational programs, seasonal events like Boo at the Zoo, and a 4D Theater.
Spring and fall offer the most comfortable weather for walking and active animal viewing. Wednesdays offer "pay-what-you-wish" admission, making it a popular but busier day.
Tickets must be reserved online in advance. Various ticket tiers are available, with "Star Attractions" often requiring a premium ticket. Parking is available for a fee at multiple entrances.
The zoo features numerous cafes, snack stands, and gift shops. It is fully accessible, with stroller and wheelchair rentals available at the main gates.
The zoo is massive, so plan to spend at least 4-5 hours or a full day. Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a reusable water bottle. Check the daily schedule for animal feedings and zookeeper talks.
The zoo is adjacent to the New York Botanical Garden and is a short distance from the historic Arthur Avenue "Little Italy" in the Bronx.
