New York City, New York
The Battery (formerly known as Battery Park) is a 25-acre public park located at the southern tip of Manhattan. It offers stunning views of New York Harbor and serves as the primary gateway for visitors heading to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.
Highlights include Castle Clinton National Monument, the SeaGlass Carousel, and the beautiful perennial gardens. The park is also home to numerous memorials, including the East Coast Memorial and the Sphere, which survived the 9/11 attacks.
Visitors can take a stroll along the waterfront promenade, ride the whimsical SeaGlass Carousel, or explore the history of Castle Clinton. It is also the location for the ferry terminal to Liberty and Ellis Islands.
Early morning is the best time to beat the ferry crowds. Sunset offers spectacular views of the Statue of Liberty and the harbor. The gardens are most beautiful from late spring through early autumn.
Entry to the park is free. Tickets for the SeaGlass Carousel and the Statue of Liberty ferries must be purchased separately. The park is open daily.
The park features several food kiosks, the Battery Gardens restaurant, and public restrooms. There are plenty of benches and shaded areas for resting.
If you are taking the ferry, allow plenty of time for security lines. The park is a great place to start a walking tour of Lower Manhattan, as it is very well-connected to public transportation.
The Battery is close to the National Museum of the American Indian, the Charging Bull statue, Wall Street, and the 9/11 Memorial.
