Los Angeles, California
The Los Angeles Zoo & Botanical Gardens is a 133-acre sanctuary located in the heart of Griffith Park. Home to more than 2,100 animals representing over 270 species, many of which are rare or endangered, it also features a diverse botanical collection with over 800 plant species from around the world.
Major highlights include the Campo Gorilla Reserve, the Elephants of Asia exhibit, and the LAIR (Living Amphibians, Invertebrates, and Reptiles). The Tom Mankiewicz Conservation Carousel, featuring hand-carved wooden animals, and the California sea lion exhibit near the entrance are also favorites for families.
Visitors can explore various global habitats, attend keeper talks and animal feedings, and enjoy bird shows at the Angela Collier World of Birds Theater. The zoo also offers a Safari Shuttle for an easy way to see the expansive grounds. Seasonal events like "L.A. Zoo Lights" during the holidays are extremely popular.
Arrive right at opening (10:00 AM) when animals are most active and temperatures are cooler. Weekdays are significantly less crowded than weekends. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable weather for walking the hilly terrain.
Admission to the Los Angeles Zoo requires a paid ticket. Advance online reservations are highly recommended. The zoo is open daily from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with animals beginning to go in for the night at 4:00 PM.
Facilities include multiple dining locations and snack bars, souvenir shops, public restrooms, a nursing station, stroller and wheelchair rentals, and several shaded picnic areas. Parking is free for all visitors.
Wear comfortable walking shoes as the zoo is quite large and has some steep sections. Bring a reusable water bottle to use at the various refill stations. Check the daily schedule upon arrival for special presentations and animal encounters.
