About

Overview

The Bradbury Building is an architectural landmark and the oldest commercial building in the central core of Los Angeles. Built in 1893 by mining millionaire Lewis Bradbury, its unassuming brick exterior hides one of the most beautiful and photographed interiors in the city, featuring a stunning Victorian-style atrium.

Highlights

The building's centerpiece is its five-story skylit atrium, which is flooded with natural light. Highlights include the intricate open-cage "birdcage" elevators, the decorative wrought-iron railings, the Italian marble stairs, and the warm Mexican tile floors. It is famously recognized as a filming location for movies like Blade Runner and (500) Days of Summer.

Things to Do

While the upper floors are occupied by private offices (including the LAPD's Internal Affairs division), the ground floor and the first landing of the staircase are open to the public. Visitors can admire the architecture, take photos of the atrium, and see a statue of Charlie Chaplin in the lobby.

Best Time to Visit

Visit during a sunny day to see the atrium at its most spectacular, as the skylight illuminates the ironwork and wood details. It is generally open during standard business hours (9:00 AM to 5:00 PM), though access may be limited on weekends.

Entry Details

Entry to the lobby and first landing of the Bradbury Building is free for the public. Guided architectural tours of Downtown LA often include a stop here and provide more in-depth history.

Facilities

As a working office building, public facilities are limited to the lobby area. However, there are numerous cafes and restaurants immediately outside on Broadway, and the Grand Central Market is directly across the street.

Tips

Be respectful of the tenants and maintain a quiet atmosphere. Combine your visit with lunch at the Grand Central Market for a classic Downtown LA experience. The building is easily accessible via the Metro B or D lines (Civic Center/Grand Park station).

Nearby Attractions

Nearby attractions include the Grand Central Market, the Million Dollar Theater, the Angels Flight Railway, and the historic Last Bookstore.
