Los Angeles, California
The Hollywood Bowl is one of the most famous outdoor musical venues in the world, set against the backdrop of the Hollywood Hills. Since its opening in 1922, this natural amphitheater has hosted some of the greatest performers in history and serves as the summer home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
The venue is iconic for its distinctive white concentric-arched band shell, which has been redesigned several times over the decades. A major highlight of the "Bowl experience" is the tradition of picnicking before the show, with many patrons bringing elaborate meals and wine to enjoy in their seats or at designated picnic areas.
The primary activity is attending a concert, ranging from classical music and jazz to pop and rock. During the day, the Hollywood Bowl is a public park where visitors can walk through the grounds, visit the Hollywood Bowl Museum for free, and even watch the LA Phil rehearse on certain mornings.
The official concert season runs from June through September. Arriving early for a concert is a must to enjoy a pre-show picnic. The museum and grounds are worth a visit during the day for a quieter experience and to see the historic architecture up close.
Entry to the grounds and the Hollywood Bowl Museum is free during the day. Concerts require a paid ticket, with prices ranging from very affordable bench seats to premium garden boxes. Parking is limited and highly regulated; using the Bowl's "Park & Ride" or shuttle services is highly recommended.
Facilities include the amphitheater, multiple picnic areas, on-site restaurants and food stands, the Hollywood Bowl Museum, a gift shop, public restrooms, and a variety of shuttle and transportation hubs.
Do not attempt to drive to the Bowl on a concert night; use the various Park & Ride or shuttle options from around the city. Bring a jacket, as it can get surprisingly cool in the canyon after the sun goes down. Check the venue's rules on what food and drink you can bring, as they vary by event.
Nearby attractions include the Hollywood Bowl Overlook (for great city views), the Hollywood Sign, the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and the various shops and theaters of Hollywood.
