About

Preserving Tennessee's Legacy

The Tennessee State Museum is a world-class history museum located at the northwest corner of Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park. Opened in its new facility in 2018, the museum chronicles the history of the Volunteer State from its geological formation and First Peoples to the present day. The sprawling 137,000-square-foot building features interactive exhibits, a digital learning center, and a "Tennessee Time Tunnel" that guides visitors through key eras such as the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the Civil Rights Movement.

Admission to the museum is free, making Tennessee's rich history accessible to all. The collection includes significant artifacts such as Andrew Jackson's silk hat, a Civil War cannon, and women's suffrage banners. The museum also hosts rotating temporary exhibitions that explore specific themes in art, culture, and history, providing a dynamic and educational environment for understanding the diverse stories that have shaped the state and the nation.
