About

The Nation's Obelisk

The Washington Monument is a massive stone obelisk built to honor George Washington, the first President of the United States and commander-in-chief of the Continental Army. Standing 555 feet tall, it is the world's tallest stone structure and the world's tallest obelisk. Located at the center of the National Mall, it dominates the D.C. skyline and is visible from miles away.

Visitors can take an elevator to the observation deck at the top for panoramic views of the city and the surrounding region. The monument is surrounded by a circle of 50 flags representing the states, serving as an enduring tribute to the founding father of the nation.
