About

Historic Square

Washington Square is another of William Penn's five original public squares. It is located in the Society Hill neighborhood, near Independence Hall.

Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

The square is home to the Tomb of the Unknown Revolutionary War Soldier. An eternal flame and a statue of George Washington honor the thousands of soldiers buried in the square during the war.

Tree Conservation

The square is known for its diverse collection of trees, some of which are rare species. It serves as an arboretum and a peaceful retreat in the city.

Moon Tree

A sycamore tree in the square was grown from a seed carried to the moon on the Apollo 14 mission. It stands as a living tribute to the space program.
