Minneapolis, Minnesota
The Stone Arch Bridge in Minneapolis, Minnesota, is a historic limestone bridge crossing the Mississippi River. In the "Landmarks / Historical Places" category, it is a National Civil Engineering Landmark and the only bridge of its kind on the Mississippi. Visitors should go for the panoramic views of St. Anthony Falls and the downtown skyline.
The bridge itself is an architectural marvel with 23 arches. It offers the best viewing point for St. Anthony Falls, the only major waterfall on the Mississippi. The view of the Minneapolis skyline from the bridge is iconic.
Walk or bike across the bridge (pedestrians and cyclists only). Take photos of the river, falls, and city. Read the interpretive signs about the bridge's history and the milling district. Watch the sunset over the city.
Sunset is arguably the most beautiful time for views and photos. Summer evenings are lively with people. Early mornings are quiet and peaceful. The bridge is open year-round.
Access to the bridge is free. It is open to pedestrians and cyclists 24/7. Parking is available in nearby ramps and metered street spots on both sides of the river.
There are no facilities on the bridge itself, but restrooms and water fountains are available in the parks at either end (Mill Ruins Park and Father Hennepin Bluff Park). Benches are placed along the bridge.
The bridge connects the Mill District to the St. Anthony Main area, both great for dining. It can be breezy on the bridge, so dress accordingly. Segway tours often cross the bridge.
Mill City Museum and the Guthrie Theater are on the west bank. St. Anthony Main with its restaurants and cinema is on the east bank. Father Hennepin Bluff Park is also on the east side.
