The Desert Botanical Garden is a stunning 140-acre living museum located in Papago Park, near the border of Phoenix, Scottsdale, and Tempe, and easily accessible from Glendale. It is home to thousands of species of cactus, trees, and flowers from all around the world, with a focus on the Sonoran Desert. The garden is a world-class center for research, conservation, and education.
Highlights include the Harriet K. Maxwell Desert Wildflower Loop, the Sybil B. Harrington Cactus and Succulent Galleries, and the Butterfly Pavilion (seasonal). The garden hosts art exhibitions, concerts, and the popular Las Noches de las Luminarias holiday event. The trails offer breathtaking views of the red sandstone buttes of Papago Park.
Walk the five thematic trails to learn about desert plants and people. Visit the butterfly exhibit in spring or fall. Attend a flashlight tour or a concert. Enjoy a meal at Gertrude's restaurant on-site. Photography is excellent here, especially during the golden hour.
October through April offers the most comfortable weather and is when most wildflowers bloom (especially March-April). Summer visits should be planned for very early morning or evening events to avoid the heat.
Admission tickets are required and prices vary; advanced purchase is recommended. The garden is open daily, with extended hours for special events. Discounts are often available for members, seniors, and children.
The garden features paved and accessible trails, a gift shop, a plant shop, and dining options including a restaurant and a patio café. Restrooms and water stations are located throughout. Wheelchairs and electric scooters are available for rent.
Wear comfortable walking shoes, a hat, and sunscreen. Bring a water bottle; refill stations are available. Visit early in the morning for the best birdwatching and cooler temperatures. Check the calendar for special exhibitions and events.
